Where does post partum depression and psychosis come into play here? As we now know, both of these disorders can occur more frequently with faster onset and deeper problems than ever thought in the past. What did women in the past do who had little or no help, or only lay midwives to assist them during birth. Who did they then blame for their supposed PTSD? They did not live in the hugely litiginous society that we do now, so I wonder what they would have called PTSD in those times?

Thank you for this insightful and touching post. I love the idea of "repair" for mothers. It is true that no matter how we try, twisting ourselves into pretzels sometimes, we can never be absolutely 100% of what our children need at any given point in time. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail, inspite of our best intentions. Repair feels so do-able, lots of hope there. (:

Thanks for your comment, Christy! I also had PPD after the birth of my first daughter. I agree - the conference was very enlightening!

I also attended the Perinatal Mood Disorder Conference last weekend in Tampa. It was one of the most informative sessions I have ever listened to. I was enlightened on many areas of PPD and it made me better understand why I suffered. I am a PPD survivor and I was excited to meet other women that had similar experiences to mine. I want to thank everyone involved with this conference! It was truly an experience I will never forget and I am excited to get started on forming local support groups in my area!
